Have you longed to redo your kitchen or bath? Naturally, everyone would like to have a drop dead gorgeous award winning kitchen and bath. How do you go about finding a designer and construction firm, what are the qualities or makeup that you should look for and what differentiates or makes one firm unique from another?Katheryn Cowles of K.W. Cowles Design & Cabinet Division of Paul Cowles Construction thinks that most firms in this area do not have an understanding of the products and resources available in the area and do not have the design experience to achieve a comprehensive and cohesive plan for a kitchen or bath remodel"The one item I see many designers do is sacrifice function for pretty. Aesthetics are important, however, you should never sacrifice the function and safety of a kitchen or bath design when both can almost always be achieved."Also, continues Cowles, "The kitchen and bath are very complex areas to design and not many professional designers are qualified to deal with these areas."
Katheryn is a Certified Kitchen & Bath Designer, this certification is an interior design option in 60 endorsed schools of higher education and requires seven years interning and designing residential kitchens before you qualify to take the certification exam. The National Kitchen & Bath Association states that Certified Designers are highly skilled in design, space planning, product selection, decorating and they have extensive knowledge of building codes, and materials. They write specifications, draft plans that include mechanical systems and are easily interpreted by the trades. A certified designer will oversee and supervise every phase of the project and quite often hold their client's hand when a crisis happens or a schedule must be revised or extended.
Katheryn has been a key member of the design community for 30 years and is currently President of the National Kitchen & Bath Association Emerald Coast Chapter, her kitchen, bath and other room designs have garnered numerous awards on a national as well as a regional level. Katheryn is a member of "The Kitchen & Bath Workshop" a group of six professional design experts that will present seminars beginning Thursday, Aug. 27 on the dos and don't s of kitchen and bath design. The seminars will focus on educating small groups from the general public on what to look for in good design, emerging design trends, 2010 color forecast, product and storage tips, flooring and lighting.
