The Latest News from How The Weatherworks
Weather camps for 2011 are already in the planning stages. Our flagship site, Howard University in Washington, DC, will have one high school residence camp and possibly as many as 3 middle school commuting camps. Camps (either middle and/or high school) will also be held in Mayaguez (PR), New York City (NY), El Paso (TX), Greensboro (NC), Jackson (MS), Lincoln (NE) and Phoenix (AZ). Work has begun on expanding the weather camp program to more than a dozen sites by the summer of 2012. This will be done in conjunction with existing partners and requested NSF and NOAA funding. Look for additional details during the next few months.
We are now heavily involved in fostering the nationwide growth of Foot's Forecast, an innovative weather forecasting program showcasing the talents of interested high school and underclass college undergraduates. The forecast program has a newly launched website. You may wish to check in to see what future meteorologists are capable of delivering in the way of weather services.
The series entitled “Weather and Climate of the States,” is now appearing in Weatherwise Magazine. In November 2008, the initial article about Florida appeared. Since then articles about Alaska (January 2009), Maryland-DC-Delaware (July 2009), South Dakota (November 2009), California (March 2010) and Southern New England (November 2010) followed. Additional articles will appear during the next several years until all states (or groups of states) and Puerto Rico have been published. The articles are being written by state experts including climatologists, private sector meteorologists, university faculty and others. H. Michael Mogil conceived the idea for the series, is co-authoring the articles and is serving as its organizational editor.
Barbara Levine and H. Michael Mogil participated at the USA Science Festival (Washington, DC - Oct 2010), and at various regional and national NSTA conferences (fall 2010 - spring 2011); they will also offer activities and a stage show program about weather at the AAAS Annual Meeting (Washington, DC - February 2011).
Finally, Sky Awareness Week is coming in April 24-30, 2011. But, anytime is a good time to look up and enjoy the sky show above.
