Fun, yet intelligent piano lessons for
children and adults, beginners through advanced.
Why it is imperative that you choose a piano teacher with a college degree.
The State of Florida does not certify private music teachers. Certification is available through local and state music teachers' associations, but it
Uncorrected bad habits and poor technique will last a liftetime. Bad habits and poor technique will form during the first lesson if not
immediately corrected. A piano teacher with a degree in music as a piano performance major should be able to easily guide you or your child
through the challenges of learning the language of music without his having note reading difficulties or rhythm problems. Nothing destroys a
person's love for learning faster than being confused and frustrated. Piano playing will not be fun if you can't play well. Many parents make the
mistake of entrusting their child's music education to someone who doesn't have a music education herself; the parents assume the teacher
has credentials because she teaches in a commercial studio or has her own home-based studio. Selecting a college-educated teacher with a
piano performance degree should give you the peace of mind that your child won't be disappointed in the future if he should decide to
audition for one of the local A-rated arts magnet schools. His sound knowledge of the basics of music will greatly increase his chance of being
accepted. Besides, maybe your child has the talent to be a great virtuoso pianist when he grows up. It won't happen if he isn't properly
educated, and his technique isn't properly attended to in his early years.
Having over 20 years experience as a piano
instructor, I know how enjoyable it is for
beginners to play familiar songs. My students
learn how to play Christmas carols in the
winter, Halloween songs in the fall, and
favorites all year such as music from Disney
movies or themes from Star Wars. Beginning
adults play familiar songs that they enjoy in the
first or second lesson, and learn from books
written especially for the adult student. My
students learn to play the piano through the
study of a lesson book, finger exercises, scales,
piano technique, theory, and ear training. They
are also encouraged to choose music they enjoy
to supplement the traditional piano literature.
Music theory, piano technique, sight reading,
ear training, and a thorough understanding of
all aspects of music and music interpretation is
emphasized at the advanced student's lessons.
Beautiful, expressive playing is of the greatest
importance. Advanced students learn to
achieve this by exploring subtle varieties of
touch, advanced pedalling, and lyrical phrasing.
Each student's repertoire is a diverse array of
music from the Baroque, Classical, and
Romantic eras. Advanced students are
encouraged to choose music they would like
to learn, to supplement the traditional piano
repertoire. Learn how to practice effectively.

Kelly Walsh earned a Master of Music Degree as
a piano performance major at Comb's College of
Music in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. After
earning her Bachelor of Music Degree, Ms.
Walsh was awarded with a college fellowship
and a scholarship to continue her graduate
studies. After graduating, Kelly was selected to
be the piano accompanist at the State
University of New York. She later acquired a
position as a piano instructor at the College of
Saint Rose in New York, while teaching music
appreciation classes at local colleges. Today,
Kelly lives in Jupiter where her reputation as an
expressive pianist and an exacting musician has
made her a highly sought-after piano instructor.
She wrote and owns two US patents on a
method she has created to teach children how
to read music. A textbook on music reading that
she wrote called Wordspeller has recently been
published. (www.musicwordspeller.com)
