Biography: Dr. Peter Veling is a 1981 graduate of The School of Veterinary Medicine at Purdue University. Veterinary medicine and surgery became his goal in the sixth grade. He has been married to Jane since 1978. Together, they have three children, Rob, Drew and Caitlin. They currently share their home with two dogs, Onyx, a black Lab, Jade, a Blue-tick Coonhound, and Happy Gilmore, Bob and Nellie, three domestic short-haired cats. All of their pets are rescues, especially the three-legged Happy Gilmore.
Dr. Pete was the owner of Caring Hands Pet Hospital in Indianapolis, Indiana for 21 years. This three veterinarian companion animal hospital started in a strip center in 1988. The practice grew to three veterinarians with a support staff of 19 employees housed in a building of its own. During his time in Indiana, Dr. Pete was President of the Central Indiana Veterinary Medical Association, served on the Continuing Education Committee for the Indiana Veterinary Medical Association for 12 years and on the Purdue University School of Veterinary Medicine Admissions Committee for his final year in Indiana. He was a Scoutmaster of Troop 427 in Indianapolis for five years and served in various committee positions for the troop for an additional three years. He coached girls' volleyball for five years and helped start an indoor sports facility for the volleyball club for which he coached.
Continuing Education is one of Dr. Pete's passions. During an average year he will attend 60 to 100 hours of seminars even though only 20 hours per year are required to maintain a veterinary license. This means that there will be days when he will be absent from the practice for new learning and refreshing previously learned information. There is nothing like the enjoyment that comes from learning, especially at the North American Veterinary Conference in mid-January of every year.
Dr. Pete is co-author of Yorkshire Terriers For Dummies with Tracy Barr. He wrote the veterinary portion. Working with Tracy during the many rewrites was an enjoyable experience for him.
Warm weather sparked a desire to move to Saint Augustine because he and Jane enjoy golf (most of the time, you'll understand if you play golf), scuba diving, kayaking and the beach.
Special Interests: Knee Surgery, Surgeries of many kinds, Skin problems, behavioral problems, internal medicine.
