Not so long ago most car insurance was sold through insurance agents. These agents do not work for free, and often their cut of the proceeds could have been one third of the premium or even more. However, despite the advent of the Internet old habits die hard and, except for a very few direct selling companies, most insurance companies sell their products through intermediaries. And, here is the bit that will surprise you; in a huge proportion of these sales, it is the intermediary that decides how much the policy is going to cost, rather than the insurance company!

How can this be, you may well ask yourself. Well, traditionally insurance companies have had a basic price for every single risk. When the policy is sold through an insurance agent or other intermediary, many companies have allowed these companies to add, within reason of course, whatever markup they wished! This means that you could buy exactly the same policy through half a dozen different brokers, many of which you may believe to be insurance companies in their own right (but that is another story!) And pay half a dozen different prices!

With a few honourable exceptions, many price comparison websites which sell car insurance are actually owned by car insurance companies! Needless to say they feature their own products. It would of course be completely wrong to suggest that they give an unrealistic value to these products, perish the thought, but it is a simple fact that if you visit a dozen different price comparison sites and give them exactly the same criteria such as your age, address, driving record, car size etc you will find that the cheapest quotation may well differ on every site, even though they claim to check every single UK insurer. Surely, you may think, that they would all come up with the same answer, if they were being completely honest! I will leave you to come to your own conclusions about that. The answer?
