Sleep is as important to your physicial and mental health as proper nutrition and exercise. Unfortunately, more than 100 million Americans of all ages regularly fail to get a good night's sleep. You can take our Sleep Quiz to help determine if you may have a sleep disorder.
A sleep disorder can significantly impact a person medical, financial and social well being. Any disorder which results in excessive daytime sleepiness (EDS) can result in poor work performance, lack of interest in social activities, and increased risk of accidents.

Over the years, both the general public and we as physicians have become aware of the prevalence and medical significance of sleep disorders. Sleep apnea, in particular, may have profound effects on day to day functioning and cardiovascular health.
The National Sleep Foundation 2003 Poll found adults reported the following occurred at least a few nights a week:

There are more than 80 recognized sleep disorders. Common sleep disorders include: Sleep Apnea -blocked and interrupted breathing during sleep Restless Leg Syndrome and Periodic Limb Movement Disorder-leg and/ or arm movements before or during sleep
Narcolepsy-severe daytime sleepiness, resulting in sudden sleep onset, sometimes accompanied by muscle weakness
Insomnia-inability to fall asleep or to remain asleep
Parasomnias-unusual behaviors during sleep, such as sleepwalking, teeth grinding, REM Behavior Disorder and other disruptions to sleep.
