Joseph Fondeur is the owner of Tropical Paradise and is shown on the left with an incredible display of some of the heliconias and gingers available at the nursery. Joseph hails from the Dominican Republic, where he was growing plants before he even began school. His love of plants was ingrained at a young age. Migrating to the U.S. as a young man, he worked in the computer field. In 1973, he moved to South Florida so that he could grow the plants he was accustomed to seeing as a child. He established a landscaping company named Gardens by Shangri-La, in 1979 and transformed that business into Tropical Paradise with the acquisition of three acres of land in Ft. Lauderdale in 1989. Joseph has been the president of the Heliconia Society of South Florida and has been on the board of directors of the Heliconia Society International for many years. He assisted in the writing of the book Heliconia, by Fred Berry and John Kress. In 1990, he was named as the first International Heliconia Member of the Year, and was recognized at the International Heliconia Convention in Hilo, Hawaii. Joseph belongs to many plant societies and is well versed on the subject of tropical plants. Over the years Joseph has become well-known in South Florida as well as in other parts of the country and world. His plants adorn many of the botanical gardens in this country, as well as many of the best landscaped homes here in South Florida.

This medium size evergreen tree (15'-20') hails from Thailand with very large pubescens leaves. It loves full sun to partial shade and is cold hardy to the upper 20's. Its large flowers start out as white and change to a rich yellow/orange. The petals sometimes will fold back. Blooms most of the year, profusely at times.

Mellicope Elleryana (Rutaceae) Pink Corkwood/Pink Princess
This very showy, fast growing evergreen tree reaches a height of 30-35 ft. It is native to Australia, but loves the full Florida sunshine or partial shade. It can be grown in most types of soil. It is cold hardy to the upper 20's. It produces very large clusters of very showy small pink flowers that appear on the top of the branches. It blooms from late spring onward.
