Ambitrans began operations in 1983 with one vehicle providing wheelchair and non-emergency stretcher van transportation in the Charlotte County area. Its primary customers were individuals requiring specialized transportation to and from medical facilities.
In 1988, Ambitrans was purchased by Grant Medical Transportation, Inc. Under its new owners, Michael and Lorraine Grant, Ambitrans continued to grow and, in the fall of 1990, expanded service by purchasing two used ambulances which allowed it to start doing BLS/ALS interfacility transfers.
The spring of 1997 saw Ambitrans enter into an agreement with Bon Secours-St Joseph Health Care System in which Ambitrans staffs, maintains, and dispatches three vehicles owned by the system to provide courtesy transportation for wheelchair bound and ambulatory clients.
Further growth followed over the next several years, until July of the year 2000 when Ambitrans expanded into neighboring Sarasota County with the purchase of Venice Ambulance Service. This effectively doubled the number of ambulances on the road and allowed Ambitrans to provide transportation service to Charlotte, De Soto, Lee, Hendry and Sarasota Counties.
Later in that same year, Ambitrans entered an agreement with Charlotte County in which Ambitrans would staff and dispatch the buses used for the countys "Dial-a-Ride" public transit system.
In September, 2002, Ambitrans purchased a Sarasota based wheelchair transportation company called "Genes Freedom Transport" which was also assimilated into the Ambitrans family.
The fall of 2002 also saw Ambitrans further expand its coverage area southward into Lee and Collier Counties with the establishment of a base in Fort Myers.
