Your home is your safe haven. It is the place where you can let down your hair, take your shoes off and really just be yourself. It is the place where you are loved, stable and secure. Thats why it is so incredibly devastating when something threatens the security of your home. Although any tragedy is terrible, the tragedy that occurs within the walls of your safe haven is particularly hard to get over. Smart families will do all that they can to prevent such a situation from occurring by taking precautionary measures to increase their home security.
Keep Your Home Safe from Burglars
One of the things that we are often most afraid of in our homes is the terror of a home invasion or burglary. The idea that someone else would come into our safe space and cause us harm is frightening. Many home security measures are designed to prevent this. Some of the options you have for increasing home security to prevent break-ins include:

Install a home alarm system. This is a common and smart way to prevent break-ins.
Improve outdoor lighting. Homes with good exterior lighting including motion lights tend to deter burglars.
Get a dog. Families with dogs are less likely to be targets of victimization in the home.
Invest in kickproof doors. Consumer Reports says that burglars often kick in doors to get in but they cant do this if you strengthen the doors with deadbolt locks and reinforced metal box strikes.
Minimize shrubbery around the home. Try to keep the yard free of big shrubs and other areas that make it easy for a burglar to hide to case the place.
Keep your doors and windows locked. If you make it easy for someone to get into your home then theyre more likely to do so. Make it tougher.
Remove any keys stored around the home. Those fake rocks and under-the-doormat keys are a very bad idea because burglars know about them by now.
Avoid being too flashy with your home. Keep your home nice and neat, of course, but dont excessively show off any wealth you have. Fancy cars should be kept in closed garages, for example, so that they dont entice burglars.
Create or get involved with a Neighborhood Watch Group. There is strength in numbers when it comes to protecting your home.

Although the threats that we fear most are external threats like burglars, the ones that are actually more likely to cause a tragedy in our homes are internal threats. Failure to lock away guns, heavy machinery and chemicals pose a huge threat to our childrens safety and security. Improve home security in this area by doing the following:

Make sure that all guns are locked away in gun cabinets or gun safes. Vincent Ianelli, M.D. reports that “Firearm related injuries are a leading cause of death in children, and include deaths from unintentional injuries, homicide and suicide.” Make family guns as inaccessible as possible to kids of all ages.
Remember to store the guns and bullets separately. The bullets should also be locked away in an area separate from the safe.
Educate your children about gun safety. No matter how good your gun safes are, determined kids may find a way to get in there. Make sure they are educated about gun safety just in case.
Lock away all medications and dangerous chemicals. This is especially important when children are young. Just putting them out of reach isnt a good enough precaution. It is also important when kids are in their teens due to the unfortunate risk of teen suicide.
Make sure that all dangerous machinery is locked away and inaccessible. Keep a shed with a lock on it. Teach kids how to properly use machinery when they are being supervised.

An overview of wainscoting, and how to use it
Many of the decorative finishes used by designers and homeowners in modern houses are not new innovations, but rather variations on traditional ideas for improving the function of a home that have been adapted to become purely aesthetic. The practice of installing wainscoting is one such idea that has actually been a tradition for centuries.

Wainscoting is an ornamental dressing that is applied to the lower portion of a wall. It is composed of wall paneling, moldings, baseboard molding and chair rail or wainscot cap. [click to continue]

Looking at design magazines and blogs, it is easy to get overwhelmed with all of the options that are available to you. You are encouraged to select a single design style, such as Mediterranean or Bohemian, and create a space at home that looks like it belongs in a magazine.
However, most of us dont actually want to live in homes that are quite so perfect. We dont really have the time or drive to make our homes absolutely picture perfect. What matters in our home is really the small stuff. Little touches like tassels and beaded fringe can make a huge statement of elegance and fun regardless of what else we manage to accomplish with our home design.

Tassels are a great place to start if you want to bring a touch of luxurious design to your living space. They are reminiscent of the historic Old South but can also evoke a romantic or playful attitude in the home. Tassels, which are highly affordable, can be used in so many small ways throughout the home. Some options to consider include:

Using tassels as tiebacks for your curtains. A complementary color adds elegance whereas a contrasting color adds a burst of fun or even a graphic punch.
Hang small fun tassels from the knobs of your dresser drawers. This brings additional texture into a space designed to celebrate fabric.
Hang a single tassel from the chain of a ceiling fan or hanging lamp. Select a bold and dramatic tassel to make a big statement in this single space.
Wrap large tassels around your dining room chairs. Simple wooden or plastic chairs can become absolutely elegant with this added little touch.

Tassels are not the only things that you have at your disposal to make a big change to your home using small details. Another really great option to consider is beaded fringe. This can bring color, texture and movement to your homes design. Consider using beaded fringe in your home in the following ways:

Hang beaded fringe over doorways. A small strand of beaded fringe can bring a lot of fun color to your entryways. These can work well as window treatments, too.
Wrap beaded fringe around lampshades. Dress up plain and simple lampshades with any style of beaded fringe that suits your fancy.
Add beaded fringe to the bottom of a tablecloth or table runner. This brings a fancy touch to an otherwise simple home dcor item.
Enhance your pillows with beaded fringe. Throw pillows are a great dcor item, which is currently highly popular. Add beaded fringe around your pillows to make them truly special.

Tassels and beaded fringe can be a terrific basis for dressing up your home. Some of the other little details that you may want to consider when seeking small ways to dress up your home include:

Bows and ribbons. These can be tied in all sizes around the home to add flirtatious color.
Lace and doilies. Add to tablescapes and edgings for a romantic touch.
Appliques. These could be added to tablecloths, pillows and other fabric items to make them stand out.
Jewelry beads. String these together and hang them to create pretty sparkly decorations that look great in the light.

Any of these things can enhance the design of your home. They help to bring that magazine style of beauty to your home even when you dont have the time or money to make sure that every single bit of your space is perfectly coordinated. These little touches literally tie a home together.

It is tempting as a traditional business to not get involved in Social Networking. It is not easy to know what is important or even where to start. We know that many who prefer working with their hands might just ignore Social Media altogether unless they decide to use it to generate more leads or sales. [click to continue]

At Good Millwork, we appreciate the beauty of a well constructed building. That takes more than good raw materials, it takes vision on the part of the architect who designs the building. Even the best building can stick out like a sore thumb if the architect does not consider the property it is being built on, the styles of adjacent buildings, and the predominant styles of the greater area beyond the immediate neighborhood. Every year on October 15, blogs all around the world choose the same topic to discuss in an effort to promote change on Blog Action Day.
This year the topic is water. Water is very important to us at Good Millwork since one of our signature products, deadhead sinker cypress, comes from water.

The “Miraculous Staircase” is twenty-two feet high, has thirty-three steps forming two complete circular turns of 360 degrees each – without a center support. There were absolutely no nails used. The entire structure is held together with wooden pegs. The hardwood is spliced in seven places on the inside, and in nine on the outside. Each piece forms a perfect curve. [click to continue]

How would you feel if you had worked all your life and were still working at 71 years old, owned your home free and clear, paid all your taxes and the city you lived in decided to bulldoze your house?
That is the precisely the situation facing Ferris, Texas resident Jackie Kimbrell. [click to continue]

Livio De Marchi came to our attention when we received an e-mail from a fan who suggested we view the amazing and mechanical detail of a full size Ferrari F50 carved from wood. His work, though carved from wood, is anything but wooden. The common woods he uses, knots and all, make it clear that he is not trying to disguise the nature of the medium. [click to continue]

If you have ever watched movies set in a more opulent time, they always have a home with a library as a part of the action. The library has floor to ceiling bookcases for most of the room. On one wall, however, there is a fireplace surrounded by paneling and molding. The entire room is constructed of a warm brown wood. The library becomes a character in the story, every bit as important as the actors moving on the stage. [click to continue]
