From the Pastor - Loving the way God loves... Giving the way God gives...
When we discerned Gods mission for our community two years ago, one of the major elements of our parishs calling was to "love as Christ loves." These past few weeks, we have been going deeper into what this means. One concrete example of how God has loved us, and gave to us was when Jesus was in the Garden of Gethsemane. If you remember, he was in a state of extreme stress, sorrow, fear... to the point of sweating blood. He knew what was going to happen next and what the Father was asking of him. How did he love? What was his decision? How did he respond to what the Father was asking of him? Jesus took his deeply troubled situation to the Father in prayer. Then he came to a resolution to: Trust and be obedient to the Father's plan and will for him... "Let not my will but yours be done." Christ was willing to go forward, to sacrifice his life, to suffer and die so that we might live. The Father has sent him on a mission to save the world from what? From our sin and selfish way of life. We would be saved by his way of living, loving and giving. Today, we are not saved by some magical way, but by following His example... By living the way he lived and giving the way he gave...
Although love always involves sacrifice and hard work, it ultimately brings joy, hope and peace. This is a very positive thing. Following God's example, loving the way he loves, is always the answer. If we would only trust God and His plan for us and be obedient to what God asks of us. God will give us the strength and grace to do whatever he asks of us. St. Paul reminds us that "God has called you.. he will not fail you." (1 Thes. 5:24). Imagine what you could do if you knew you couldn't fail? If you're doing what God truly wills for you and you're truly plugged into his grace...
We, as a parish, are currently re-examining and renewing our annual commitment to stewardship as a way of life. We are all prayerfully reflecting on our theme this year, Loving the way God loves and Giving the way God gives. How are we making Gods priorities our priorities? What does it mean to take the risk of making the Gospel come alive in our world, our parish, and in our personal lives. I ask that we all take a step in faith, placing our trust in God, the source of all we have and all we are, the one who has always been there for us, who has never failed us. As our holy scriptures reassure us over 600 times, be not afraid, or do not fear.
In grateful thanksgiving for all Gods many gifts to us.
