*Note - To date, our raffles of Mr. Lewis' paintings have raised $5,100 for local causes, including The Florida Humane Society, The Deerfield Beach Arboretum and The American Cancer Society's "Relay for Life".
History of "The Highwaymen":
"Highwaymen" refers to a group of 26 recognized artists. They traveled the highways and byways of Florida in the 1950's - 1960's. Many selling their works by the roadside. Florida residents and visitors of that time, fondly remember them on their journeys around Florida. Only a few original Highwaymen are still active in the Art Community today, and R.L. Lewis is one of them. His works have been displayed at the Smithsonian Institute in a special exhibit "African American Masters - A Florida Original: R.L. Lewis and the Highwaymen Tradition". He has a grant with the National Endowment of the Arts - "Preserving the Highwaymen Tradition" 2003-05. He is a Florida Artist Hall of Fame Inductee; 2004.
