Have you thought about our future as a community as far as retirement goes?
One of the arguements that haters of the LGBT community always present is: You will have no social support when you’re older, because your rights are not the same as “ours”.
I admit that it is a hateful diatribe to hear, but some days I do think about what this lack of legal and societal support for us and the relationships that we choose to honor will mean in the long run and how will it impact us.
Especially for me and my partner because where I am, I can’t leave anything estate-wise without the law or relatives butting in.
Please feel free to comment. The floor is open.
GLBT people have choices and options, and can legally honor our relationships. But these choices have to be legally addressed because the laws are set up to protect straight people, and your GLBT relationships must be spelled out along with your wishes for your estate. You will have more control over your life when you are older if you have the money to hire a GLBT lawyer to protect your interests. So save now and plenty for the money you will need in retirement. There are now GLBT retirement homes, and the nicest one I know of is in Santa Fe. You can leave your estate to whoever you want, and your family and the law can’t interfere if you have your wishes spelled out legally. The haters will be there, but you can beat them to the punch with the right attorney and estate plan.
