Current Sermon Series and Adult Sunday School
Our current sermon series is taken from Paul's epistle to the Galatians. This letter has been called the "Magna Carta" of the Christian Church in the sense that its theme could come from the statement "Stand fast therefore in the liberty by which Christ has made us free, and do not be entangled again with a yoke of bondage" (Gal. 5:1). The Spirit of God has been poured out upon Christ's church in a manner that we can live with freedom as we walk and live by that Spirit. As we live out the Gospel we can do so with joy and peace and other-centered love.
Our corporate worship surrounding this theme has been rich. We understand that the worship of God together is the most important and vital time of our week. That worship given to God as the "wholly" and "holy" Object of our adoration and thanks is understood to be actively participatory. We do not come to church to be passively entertained. We are not here to please ourselves, but Him Who has given us our created life as people and our redeemed life as "His" people.
But we also realize worship has an effect upon us as worshippers, and that effect is dependent largely upon its quality and design. We do arrange it, carefully crafting it in what we understand corresponds to a Biblical pattern, and execute it. As a result of this effort, our worshp tends to mold us in its own image. The forms we use are not neutral. Worship itself has an inescapable outcome which is directed back to the believer. Though it is not clearly self-evident, in large measure, our worshp will determine the quality of our walk with God. If it is immature, then the congregation becomes immature. If it is mindless, then the congregation becomes shallow or impersonally formal and unable to discriminate and approve what is exellent. If it is man-centered, then the congregation never grows out of its infantile cravings for self-centered gratification.
Regretably, many in our culture choose places of worship out of hedonistic motivations - seeking to bring themselves pleasure. Because we realize that the shape of our worship will ultimately shape us, we pray that our worshp will be structured to honor the Lord Christ in His majesty and simplicity and beauty. If this is the case, His people will bear His image.
Our adult Sunday School class is engaged in a series that corresponds to the theme of Galatians entitled "Living in Grace." This is the course which for years has been used in the training of our PCA missionaries to live and share the Gospel. The goal of Living in Grace is to provide discipleship training which leads to being more effectively equipped for life and ministry. Our desire is to enhance the ability of those going through the DVD series to grasp God's grace in their personal lives so that they will be enabled to more effectively fulfill the role God desires for them in His Kingdom and through the local church.
