Who We Are
The Bradenton Charter School was established in 2000 as the Developmental Center Manatee, Inc. d.b.a. Bradenton Charter School. We serve students in grades 3 through 8 and have an educational objective which is unique in Manatee County.

The school offers students differentiated instruction and flexible grouping at each grade level. Students who need extra help, or are above grade level, have opportunities to work in small groups with teachers and teacher assistants in order to review work and improve their skills. This allows the teachers to address student needs and plan how students move forward. Regardless of their abilities, students are kept in the same classrooms as their peers (inclusion model) and teachers promote learning by building on students' knowledge base and thus create a rich curriculum. It is a fundamental that the more you know, the more you are able to learn.

Today, over 70% of employment requires some degree of licensing, certification of other accreditation. Students who have strong foundation skills and a broad knowledge base will be better equipped to handle changing situations and develop continued interests and hobbies. It is our goal to give children these tools and to do so in an environment which is supportive and caring.

Why it works
Traditional schools can be stressful. Students experience large academic and social settings. Schools require students to move from place to place and have too many choices. Social groups require children to conform and peer groups often influence students in ways that hamper learning.

Our school tries to address these and the following problems in ways that are extraordinary to traditional public schools. Our parents and students have voices, and have said that in traditional public schools:

* Children have "knowledge poverty" due to public school focus on benchmark tests
* Just as children settle down, they have to change classes
* Bullying is allowed because schools are too large and cannot control their populations
* Lessons are rushed and children don't understand what is asked of them
* Homework is over used and ends up teaching the lessons of what should have been
* taught in class

The school's philosophy is that everyone is important and that those who struggle academically should not be left behind. Teachers must help all students and despite differences, students must be taught the same curriculum and be held to the same evaluations and tests. Bradenton Charter School maintains that students come to school to work, and need help to "get the job" done.

Students who feel good about themselves tend to show it in their work. Children who know what is expected of them (what, when and where), tend to be more confident and satisfied. Children who are dealt with honestly and are expected to take responsibility for their learning, tend to be appreciative and more pragmatic in their approaches to learning. Finally, it takes a village to properly educate a student and we try to be that village.

Who Are Our Students
The school is an alternative for students who: Do better in smaller classes, or function more effectively in smaller educational settings; Come from homes where parents are dissatisfied with traditional schools, and are seeking an alternative placement; May not be reaching their full academic potential; Are less willing or proficient at handling the activities or large groups of today's classes.

The school is a recipient of the 2004 Florida School Recognition Award and is honored as one of the top 50 combination schools in Florida for 2005-2006. Additionally, Mr. Donnelly, the school's principal, was honored as a 2004 School Administrator of the Year Finalist by the Florida African American Education Alliance.

How Expensive is Tuition?
The Bradenton Charter School is publicly funded. We follow the guidelines and many of the rules of the Manatee County School System. Since we are publicly funded, WE ARE FREE.

What is the Process, and Who Are We Looking For?
Parents and children complete applications and supply basic information in an interview process. Applications can be down loaded from this website, picked up at the front lobby, or received from the school via post or facsimile. The process is actually quite simple, straightforward and informal.

The school is looking for children who can benefit from its small environment, and has the capacity for 104 students arrayed in five classrooms.

The school's class sizes are no more than 18 students for grades 3 & 4 and 22 students per class in grades 5 through 8. The student body ranges from advanced students to remedial. The curriculum is aligned to the Sunshine State Standards, and the Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test is given to all children.

Examples of Our Integrated Curriculum
"Our Expanding World" - A school-wide focus on the world's peoples, places, environment, geography, arts, foods, and history. The objectives are to promote reading, writing, math, science, and social studies in a "world" context that offers students opportunities to involve themselves in projects that interest them.

"Readers For Life" - A school-wide focus on grade leveled literature. The selections are chosen to inspire students to want to read and range from serious and heartfelt topics to fun and ridiculous. An example of the 3rd and 4th grades reading list includes: Frankenstein, by Mary Shelly; A Dog's Life: The Autobiography of a Stray, by Ann Martin; Dillon Dillon by Kate Banks; The Tiger Rising by Kate DiCamillo; The Secret Garden by Frances Burnett; Black Beauty by Anna Sewell; and The Time Machine by H.G. Wells.
