Stepfamiles come in many forms and involve children of all ages. Adult "children" can have just as much difficulty adjusting as younger children do.

Stepfamilies don't work in the same way as biological families,
and very few people realize this until they are part of one.

As a stepparent, you are a perpetual understudy for
the occasionally absent "lead" (biological parent).

When the lead comes "on stage" the understudy's
presence is at best, redundant, and at worst, resented.

You can ONLY become a successful understudy with the
support of the lead. And you can only dance your part with
strength, dignity and passion, when you and the lead follow the
choreography you have co-created.
